The city of rebel merchants

One of the oldest cities in Portugal — and the one that gave the country its name — Porto is a city shaped by trade, the Douro River, and a fiercely independent spirit. Its nearly 900 years of official history barely capture the story of its rebellious merchants, whose ambition helped build one of the greatest empires in history.
In the morning, we enjoy a guided walking tour through the historic center. Starting near the Church of Carmo, we explore Livraria Lello, the Clérigos Church and Tower, and the former Jewish quarter, a key element of Porto’s medieval economic life.
We then walk down Rua das Flores toward São Bento Railway Station, where iconic azulejo panels depict defining moments of Portuguese history. From there, we climb up to Porto’s Cathedral, one of the city’s oldest landmarks, before descending to the Ribeira district by the Douro River, where trade and daily life have met for centuries.

A journey into the true Porto: authentic, intense, and untamed
